Amotus takes connected consumer products from concept to production — industrial design support, electronics, RF and wireless, firmware, mobile app, and cloud — and gets them through FCC, ISED (Canada), and CE/RED certification. We build on Matter, Thread, Bluetooth LE, and Wi-Fi, and we design for the BOM cost, battery life, and manufacturing reality of a consumer product. Bilingual engineering team headquartered in Quebec City.

Who we build connected consumer products for
Hardware startups (pre-seed to Series B)
You need a demonstrable MVP to raise, then a manufacturable product. You’re under pressure on BOM cost, on certification (FCC/IC/CE), and on the prototype-to-production gap. We design the electronics and firmware, drive the wireless certification, and hand off a manufacturable design — with engagement models that fit a startup’s cash position.
Consumer brands adding a connected product
You have a brand and a market, and you want to add a connected device or a smart version of an existing product. We own the engineering — electronics, firmware, app, cloud — so you can focus on the brand and the channel.
Established OEMs outsourcing a module
You need a specific layer built: an RF/wireless module, a Matter/Thread integration, a battery-optimized firmware, or a board redesign for cost. We deliver that module to your specification, documented and certification-ready.
Standards and certifications we design to
| Standard / certification | Scope |
|---|---|
| FCC Part 15 | U.S. radio-frequency emissions for electronic devices |
| ISED (IC) | Canadian radio & equipment certification |
| CE / RED 2014/53/EU | European radio equipment directive |
| Matter (CSA) | Smart-home interoperability standard |
| Thread / Bluetooth SIG / Wi-Fi Alliance | Wireless protocol qualification & certification |
| IEC 62368-1 | Audio/video & IT equipment safety |
| UN 38.3 | Lithium-battery transport testing |
| RoHS / REACH | Restriction of hazardous substances, materials compliance |
| UL / cUL | North American product safety (via accredited labs) |
Transparency note: certification is granted by accredited test labs and certification bodies, not by Amotus. What we do is design your product to pass — pre-compliance testing, RF layout discipline, and the documentation the lab needs — and manage the certification campaign with our lab partners so first-pass success is the norm rather than the exception.

Embedded firmware & power optimization
Battery-life engineering (low-power MCU modes, duty cycling, measured power budgets), robust OTA, and a clean, maintainable firmware base.
Deliverables: firmware source, measured power budget, OTA mechanism, battery-life validation.
Mobile app & cloud back-end
The companion app (iOS/Android) and the cloud — device provisioning, user accounts, telemetry, and OTA management — so the product is a complete experience, not just a board.
Deliverables: mobile app, cloud architecture, device-management back-end, APIs.
Prototype-to-production & manufacturing handoff
DFM/DFA review, manufacturing test (functional test, calibration), EMS partner selection, and a clean handoff package so production ramps without surprises.
Deliverables: DFM report, test fixtures/specs, manufacturing package, EMS introduction.

Frequently asked questions — consumer electronics
How do you handle data security?
Security is a first-class design requirement, not an afterthought. We work to SOC 2 Type II–audited practices (Groupe Vectanor), with zero-trust architecture, mTLS between devices and cloud, encryption in transit and at rest, and data residency in the region you require on our multi-region Fundamentum platform (Canada, US, Europe, and more). Your data stays yours, with clear ownership and open export.
What’s the difference between a design house and an ODM — and which do I need?
An ODM sells you a largely pre-existing design with light customization and owns much of the IP and the manufacturing — fast and cheap, but generic and locked-in. A design house like Amotus engineers a product to your specification: you own the IP, the design is differentiated, and you choose your manufacturer. If your product is a commodity, an ODM may be fine; if it’s your core differentiator and you need to own the IP and roadmap, a design house is the right call.
How much does FCC certification cost?
For a typical BLE or Wi-Fi consumer product, FCC certification lab fees commonly run USD $5,000 to $15,000, and adding ISED (Canada) and CE (Europe) increases that. Using a pre-certified wireless module can reduce intentional-radiator testing significantly. The bigger cost driver is failing and re-testing — which is why pre-compliance during design matters. These are industry-typical ranges.
Should I adopt Matter for my product?
If your product belongs in the smart home and you want it to work across Apple Home, Google Home, and Alexa without building three integrations, Matter is increasingly the answer. It runs over Thread (low-power mesh) or Wi-Fi. The trade-offs are certification effort and a still-maturing spec. We help you decide based on your category, your ecosystems, and your timeline — and we don’t push Matter where simple BLE is the better fit.
Can you take my product from prototype to mass production?
Yes — that gap is where many startups stall. We do DFM/DFA, design the manufacturing test, select and coordinate an EMS partner, and deliver a clean handoff package so the production ramp doesn’t surprise you. We can introduce vetted EMS/assembly partners in North America and Asia.
How do you maximize battery life?
Battery life is engineered, not hoped for: low-power MCU sleep modes, aggressive duty cycling, the right wireless protocol (BLE and Thread are very efficient), and a measured power budget validated on real hardware. We give you a power budget you can trust, not a marketing number.
What engagement models do you offer startups?
We offer capped-effort engagements for feasibility and MVP phases, milestone-based payment, and time-and-materials for ongoing work. For strategic projects, deferred-payment or equity arrangements may be considered case by case. The goal is to match the engagement to your funding stage.
What’s the typical timeline for a connected consumer product?
A demonstrable prototype/MVP is often 3 to 6 months. A production-intent, certified product typically runs 9 to 15 months from concept, depending on complexity, mechanical/industrial-design scope, and the certification path. These are industry-typical ranges; your timeline depends on scope.
Who owns the IP?
You do. In a design-house engagement, the design and the intellectual property belong to you. We document everything and hand over the full design package — no lock-in to us or to a specific manufacturer.
